Endourology Training
Training in Laparoscopic Surgery in Urology is currently offered at Grey's Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. The following facilities exist:- Laparoscopic surgery dry lab with lap trainers.
- Dedicated laparoscopic urology weeks every month.
- Biannual Endourology Workshops.
Laparoscopic Weeks
The Department of Urology, Greys Hospital, has monthly 'laparoscopic weeks' at Greys Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. The dates for the lap weeks of 2011 are:- 10 - 13 January 2012

Endourology Workshops
The first SAES Endourology workshop was successfuly hosted in 2008.The second SAES Endourology workshop, hosted at Greys Hospital in Pietermaritzburg on 15 and 16 November 2010 was another great success. Approximately 70 urologists and registrars from around Southern Africa attended.
International guest surgeons Prof Arthur Smith, Prof Jaime Landman, Prof Manoj Monga and Prof Andreas Gross, as well as local guest surgeons performed endoscopic, laparoscopic and stone surgery, exhibiting their skill and providing valuable insights and training. Dr Mitch Terk, a world renowned brachytherapy specialist demonstrated brachytherapy and gave tips and tricks from his vast experience.
Over the course of the two days, five laparoscopic cases, five TURIS cases, one brachytherapy case, three flexible ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy cases and three PCNL cases were performed, with the attendees having the opportunity to assist in some cases, and to share their experience. The Southern African Endourology Society workshop is planned to take place annually from now on. More information on next year's workshop will be posted in due course. Members are also invited to attend the laparoscopic weeks held at Greys Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. These take place once a month, and consist of three days of laparoscopic surgery. The dates for next year's laparoscopic weeks will be posted on the website in due course.
Future Prospects
The SAES is planning outreach to other African countries, the first of which, Kenya, was visited in 2011.Documents Attached to: Endourology Training
